SASARAM---------------------In a major operation against illicit financial movements, police in Bihar’s Rohtas district intercepted a luxury car and seized ₹66.50 lakh in unaccounted cash near the Shivsagar Toll Plaza along the national highway.
The cash, hidden inside the vehicle's seat covers, was seized during a late-night routine vehicle inspection. Three individuals, including two women, traveling in the car were taken into custody.
Police recovered ₹66,50,000 in cash hidden away within the car's seat cushions/covers.
The occupants of the car—identified as Chandan Soni, a resident of Jani Bazaar locality in Sasaram, along with two female family members—were detained on the spot after failing to produce valid source documents.
Police conducted the official counting of the seized cash late at night at the toll plaza office in the presence of senior officers and a female police officer.
Local police have alerted the Income Tax Department to investigate the financial source, tax trail, and legitimacy of the large cash movement.
According to preliminary reports, the vehicle was traveling from Varanasi towards Sasaram when it was flagged down by a police team conducting a routine check near the Shivsagar Toll Plaza.
Upon inspecting the vehicle, officers discovered stacks of currency notes concealed inside the customized seat covers. During initial interrogation, the occupants claimed they had traveled to Varanasi for festive shopping (including Dhanteras market purchases) but returned without buying items after deals fell through.
However, because they could not immediately present supporting legal documentation for carrying such a large sum of cash, the entire amount was confiscated, and the Income Tax Department was called in to conduct a joint probe.
