ARA-----------------------A major investigative exposure has brought to light widespread systemic corruption along the vital freight corridors of Bihar’s Bhojpur district. Allegations of systematic extortion targeting long-haul commercial vehicle operators have escalated following the public circulation of video evidence capturing illegal cash collections at official transit points, most prominently surrounding the Khaira Check Post near Ara.

The illicit operations, reportedly carried out under the pretext of enforcing municipal "No Entry" timing windows and heavy-vehicle traffic regulations, have ignited intense anger among regional transport unions, interstate drivers, and commercial freight operators.

According to detailed ground reports, video footage circulating across social media platforms, and formal petitions filed with top administrative authorities, commercial drivers—particularly those operating multi-axle freight trucks and sand carriers—are routinely stopped by check post personnel and unauthorized intermediaries.

Drivers report being forced to pay sum demands ranging between ₹500 and ₹1,000 per vehicle simply to pass through designated check points or secure clearance during restricted hours.

Local traffic management rules restrict heavy commercial vehicles from entering urban and municipal boundaries during peak daylight and evening hours. Checkpoint personnel reportedly leverage these restrictions as a tool for coercion. Vehicles whose drivers pay the informal toll are illegally granted passage, while non-compliant drivers face deliberate harassment.

Freight drivers who refuse or question the illegal demand are subjected to harsh treatment, including long delays at roadside quarters, threats of heavy regulatory fines, seizure of vehicle registration documents, or outright denial of entry.

"If we refuse to hand over ₹500 or ₹1,000 at the check post, our trucks are parked on the shoulder for hours under the pretext of 'No Entry' violations, causing us to miss critical delivery deadlines," shared a commercial driver operating on the Ara-Patna freight route. "The moment money changes hands, the restrictions disappear, and the road is cleared."

The controversy gained widespread public traction after video clips documenting the illicit transactions were uploaded to online news portals, local media YouTube channels, and distributed across regional WhatsApp news groups such as Bihar News Update.

The viral footage clearly shows vehicle operators handing cash out of cabin windows to individuals stationed near the Khaira Check Post barriers, after which the vehicles are promptly signaled to proceed.

The digital dissemination of this evidence has triggered severe backlash from civil society, local business leaders, and haulage associations, who point out that such corrupt practices directly inflate transportation costs, worsen market supply chain delays, and fuel local inflation on essential commodities.

The Bhojpur District Truck Owners' Association and wider regional logistics federations have responded to the incident by taking formal legal and administrative action.

Representational petitions containing documentary proof and video evidence have been submitted directly to senior law enforcement officials, including:The Office of the Director General of Police (DGP), Bihar. The Superintendent of Police (SP), Bhojpur. The Economic Offences Unit (EOU), Patna.

Stringent disciplinary and criminal action against all police personnel, home guards, and private agents involved in illegal cash collections.

Placement of high-definition, tamper-proof CCTV cameras monitored directly from the District Headquarters to oversee operations at the Khaira Check Post and neighboring transit hubs.

Clear public display of official "No Entry" timings, statutory fine structures, and authorized payment channels to eliminate cash-based extortion.

Safeguards for commercial drivers and transport owners who report bribery and corruption at regional checkpoints.

The allegations at Khaira Check Post are not an isolated occurrence in the region. Industry representatives highlight that freight transit routes across eastern India, particularly those connecting mineral-rich and construction-heavy belts like Bhojpur, Sahar, and Koelwar, have long suffered from recurring extortion networks.

Past administrative audits and interventions by the Economic Offences Unit (EOU) have previously exposed similar illegal collection rackets involving field inspectors and local checkpoint staff in the district. Despite periodic suspensions and transfers, freight operators assert that systemic reforms remain essential to permanently disbanding these entrenched extortion networks.

In light of the mounting public outcry and viral video evidence, senior district administrative officials have assured the public that a thorough, impartial investigation will be conducted. Law enforcement leadership in Bhojpur confirmed that the video clips are undergoing technical verification to identify all personnel involved, promising strict departmental and penal action against anyone found guilty of dereliction of duty or criminal extortion.

As commercial transporters threaten to suspend freight services across key district routes if swift enforcement action is delayed, all eyes remain on the district administration to enforce accountability and restore integrity along Bihar’s critical highway networks.
