Jamia University to Revive Students’ Union After 20 Years, Hunger Strike Called Off
New Delhi: Jamia Millia Islamia has set a timeline for reviving its students’ union after a gap of nearly 20 years, following which students have called off their 18-day hunger strike. The university administration has agreed to complete the approval and implementation of the Jamia Millia Islamia Students’ Union (JMISU) Constitution by May 15, 2027.
As part of the agreement, the university has also committed to holding students’ union elections within six weeks of the commencement of the next academic session. The decision marks a significant development for students who have been demanding the restoration of an elected representative body on campus.
The administration has further agreed to revoke all show-cause notices, disciplinary proceedings, rustications and suspensions issued against students in connection with the protest.
Speaking to the media, Registrar Professor Md Mahtab Alam Rizvi confirmed that the administration had accepted all three demands raised by the protesting students. Following the assurance, the students ended their 18-day hunger strike.
The agreement is expected to pave the way for the revival of the students’ union and the restoration of an elected student representation system at Jamia after two decades.
