PATNA-------------------------In a landmark achievement for public healthcare in Bihar, the Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS), Patna, has successfully performed the state’s first liver transplant sourced from a brain-dead donor under full government funding. The life-saving organ donation gave a fresh lease on life to three critical patients who received the donor's liver and two kidneys.
The donor, 19-year-old Sonu Kumar, a resident of Hanuman Nagar in Punpun, suffered severe injuries in a road accident on October 19. He was initially admitted to Medanta Hospital Patna before being transferred to the intensive care unit (ICU) at IGIMS. Despite maximum medical interventions, doctors declared him brain-dead. In the face of immense grief, Sonu's family gave courageous consent for organ donation, paving the way for the historic procedures.
The complex organ retrieval and transplantation operations were carried out by a dedicated medical team led by Dr. Manish Mandal, Chairman of the Gastrointestinal Surgery Department, alongside key transplant surgeon Dr. Utpal Anand:
Liver Transplant: The donor's liver was transplanted into a 19-year-old woman from Anisabad who was suffering from end-stage liver failure.
Kidney Transplants: The two retrieved kidneys were successfully transplanted into two separate patients. One procedure took place at IGIMS, while the second kidney was rushed to AIIMS Patna via a specialized green corridor, covering the distance in just 14.5 minutes.
Highlighting the state government's commitment to making advanced healthcare accessible, Bihar Health Minister Mangal Pandey directed the sanction of ₹15 lakh in financial assistance to cover the full cost of the liver transplant procedure. Officials confirmed that under government initiatives, complex organ transplantations will continue to receive full state backing to ensure that financial constraints do not stand in the way of life-saving medical care.
