DELHI---------------------------Marking a major milestone in AI self-reliance, the Union Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY), under the aegis of the IndiaAI Mission, has launched three indigenous foundation AI models—Eka-1, Dheer-2B, and Dheer-5B. The initiative is designed to significantly reduce India's reliance on foreign technology conglomerates while bolstering digital sovereignty across public and private sectors.

A defining feature of these lightweight foundation models is their ability to run directly on-device without requiring internet connectivity. By enabling local execution on hardware, the models ensure that sensitive and confidential data remains securely on local infrastructure, drastically mitigating data leakage risks while allowing full functionality in remote or low-connectivity environments.

Furthermore, all three models feature native multilingual support across all 22 scheduled Indian languages, opening the door for localized AI solutions and natural language processing across diverse regional applications.

Constructed on 26.3 billion parameters and trained on a dataset of 7.5 trillion tokens, Eka-1 is optimized for complex mathematical problem-solving, advanced coding, logical reasoning, and processing scheduled Indian languages.

Tailored specifically for enterprise and institutional operations, this model focuses on secure execution within closed local networks and high-precision analysis of sensitive internal documentation.

Engineered for high-security and defense-grade operational environments, Dheer-5B features robust on-device processing designed to handle sensitive workloads within completely air-gapped systems without exposure to the public internet.
