PATNA--------------------------In the wake of a significant Supreme Court ruling, there is welcome news for lakhs of teachers facing job insecurity. This is particularly important for teachers in Bihar who were at risk of losing their positions due to not having passed the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET). The Bihar government has decided to conduct a 'Special TET' for these teachers, who were concerned about potential job loss or the inability to secure promotions. A meeting of the Education Department has officially approved the organization of this Special TET through the Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB).
In short, the Special TET in Bihar will be conducted by the Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB). This opens a pathway for teachers who were anxious about meeting the TET requirement—a prerequisite for both job retention and career advancement.
Previously, the Supreme Court had ordered the removal of teachers who had not cleared either the TET or the Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET). This placed the livelihoods of lakhs of teachers at risk, prompting them to repeatedly urge the government to take action.
The Supreme Court has granted these teachers until the year 2028 to qualify for the TET; failing this, they would be required to leave their positions. Furthermore, passing the TET has now been made mandatory for these teachers to be eligible for promotions. The situation was particularly challenging because the Bihar Education Department had not conducted a state-level TET for a long time, leaving teachers with no option but to clear the CTET—an examination generally considered more difficult. With the Bihar government’s decision to hold a Special TET, this comes as a major relief to the affected teachers.
Advice for candidates: Keep a close watch on the official BSEB website. The examination notification, dates, and eligibility criteria will be released soon.
