ARA-------------------------The collapse of a concrete water tower—built at a cost of lakhs of rupees in Ward No. 10 of the Shahpur Nagar Panchayat—remains fresh in the minds of the local residents. On the night of June 11, 2023, the water-filled tower suddenly came crashing down. The loud, explosive sound startled nearby residents, sparking chaos in the darkness of the night.
The tower held thousands of liters of water; as it collapsed, a powerful surge of water flooded the surrounding homes. At the time, some residents were cooking or preparing meals. The incident caused widespread panic among the locals. Three people, including a pregnant woman, sustained minor injuries.
Following the collapse of the newly constructed tower, residents raised serious questions regarding the quality of the construction, alleging that established standards had been ignored. At the time, however, the relevant department and the municipal administration attributed the collapse primarily to the marshy nature of the ground.
In the aftermath, the municipal administration promised to construct a new water tower to replace the damaged one. Yet, years later, reconstruction has yet to begin. Locals claim that the relevant files are merely gathering dust in the Nagar Panchayat office, with no concrete action taken to date.
Now, a new development has emerged: a concrete 'Welcome Gate' is being built on the very same site previously declared 'marshy'—the reason cited for the water tower's collapse. This has fueled intense discussion among the local residents: if the ground was deemed incapable of supporting the weight of a water tower, how was permission granted for a new, permanent structure on that same land? Local residents state that those responsible for the water tower collapse have yet to be held accountable. Furthermore, the failure to fulfill the promise of reconstruction—compounded by the commencement of new construction work at the very same site—has raised questions regarding the functioning of the municipal administration. The public is demanding that the incomplete water supply project be finished first.
